The Connecticut Hurricanes all age Drum and Bugle Corps, a marching musical organization, with roots tracing to 1932, has flourished in the competitive arena since its inception. The Hurricanes Hall of Fame was established in 1994 to honor their treasured members who have demonstrated an outstanding level of commitment, dedication and achievement to the betterment of the Hurricanes as well as to the marching arts community. The Hurricanes Hall of Fame is dedicated to archiving the history of some of the best known and influential members, instructors, creative minds as well as tireless leaders who have, in some major way, shaped, defined and perpetuated the high level of achievement and notoriety the Hurricanes have enjoyed for many decades.

John L. Ashelford
For over 40 years, John Ashelford has been an integral part of the Hurricane family, both as a marching member of the drum line and later as a valued member of the management team. Subsequent to his playing career John first served as Business Manager from 2002 – 2013 and began his tenure sitting on the Board of Directors from 2004 to the present. John ascended to the position of Vice Chairmen of the Board from 2008 – 2011 and assumed his current position as Chairman of the Board of Directors in 2012.
By way of experience, John received his first exposure to the drum corps world early in 1977 as a snare drummer for the Connecticut Thunderbolts, a small parade corps, before moving on to the Royalaires of Fairfield from 1980 thru 1981. He also played with the Shelton High School Band in 1982 & 1983. It was during this period that John received his first exposure to the Hurricanes and aspired to join them at some point in the future. That day finally came in 1982 at the age of sixteen. Even though he was somewhat green, and at times overwhelmed by the music, technique and, not to mention the skills of his fellow snare drummers, he would tell you no one ever gave up on him as he earned his place in the line. John remained in the drum line through 1993.
John’s Hurricane career is one distinguished by perseverance as well as a quiet leadership steeped in laudable dedication.
Dennis A. Banks *
Dennis Banks was involved with the Hurricanes as a marching instructor from 1978 – 1983 and again from 1992 – 2003. During Dennis’ tenure as visual instructor, the Corps won the 1981 DCA championship and captured a number of high marching trophies.
Dennis had an affable manner, which, combined with the knowledge he’d culled from a lifelong love of the marching arts, made him a superior technician. His persistence for accepting nothing but your personal best was a trait that drove the Corps to be the best it could be. Dennis was always available to assist with marching and to offer his valuable opinion. He eventually served on the Board of Directors in 2002 – 2003.
By way of background, Dennis marched with St. Raphael’s Golden Buccaneers in the 1960’s and has instructed for the following organizations, at various times, from 1970 through 2006…the Golden Crusaders, the Fairfield Colonades, the Milford Shoreliners and Fitchburg Kingsmen, as well as the Skylarks color guard, the Silver Falcons color guard, Fantasia, the Trumbull HS Marching Band, and the award winning Cheshire HS Marching Band for 22 years. In addition, Dennis served as an adjudicator for drum corps as well as color guards in the 1970’s.
George W. Biancarelli *
George was a charter member of the John H Collins Post Drum Corps in 1932, beginning his illustrious career as a drummer. He was devoted from the beginning and influenced the evolution of the Collins Post Drum Corps through the formative years. His long association with the organization lasted over 50 years through the early 1980’s.
Subsequent to his playing career, which ended in the early 50’s, George worked tirelessly on behalf of the Corps. During his time George wore many hats, among them fifer, drummer, quartermaster, treasurer, assistant director and president.
His 50+ years distinguish him as the longest tenured member in Corps history. As such; George proudly played a part in every championship achieved by the Corps.
In addition, he was a co-founder of the Connecticut Alumni Drum Corps in 1984, personally acquiring all of their start up equipment.
John A. Bodnar
John’s drum corps and musical career began in 1957 when he joined St. Ann’s Loyalaires of Bridgeport. His initiation to drumming came under the expert guidance of preeminent drumming instructor, Earl Sturtze. John later moved on to the Connecticut Royal Lancers where he continued to hone his considerable ability, under the tutelage of Ray Luedee, through 1965.
In 1966, John came to the Hurricanes where he anchored the snare line for nine years, exemplifying a standard of excellence that earned the Hurricane drum lines elite status throughout his tenure.
In individual competition, John, as a junior, was a National Open Snare Drum Champion, and was also a two time Senior National Open Snare Drum Champion. In 1974, John wrote for, and instructed the Hurricanes percussion. He has also instructed several corps in the Northeast including the RI Matadors, Conn. Royal Lancers, St. Aedan’s Emerald Cadets, Notre Dame’s ND-Etts as well as St. Raphael’s Golden Buccaneers, the Emerald Buccaneers, and the Poughkeepsie Pacers among others. In addition, John served as a percussion adjudicator for the Northeastern Circuit and Drum Corps Associates.
Subsequent to his long drum corps career, John relocated to Vermont and has enjoyed an active association with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra.
Gail M. Bottillo
Gail’s drum corps background includes marching with the Golden Buccaneers and Emerald Buccaneers of Bridgeport, and the Milford Shoreliners, (1975, 1976, and 1977 respectively), From 1978 through 1982 she performed with the Connecticut Skylarks championship color guard.
Gail has also been a Guard instructor for numerous organizations including: The Silver Falcons, Brien McMahon H.S. Marching Band of Norwalk, Masuk H.S. Marching Band & Guard of Monroe, the Norwalk H.S. Marching Band as well as Norwalk H.S. Winter Guard.
Gail joined the Hurricanes in 1979 and was a member of the color guard from 1979 through 1984 and again from 1990 through 1997. She has served in various capacities with the Corps including color guard captain from 1995 through 1997 and Corps Personnel Director in 1996 and 1997. Subsequent to this, Gail was a guard instructor from 1998 through 2002. In addition Gail was honored as Hurricane of the Year for the year 1996.
Robert Q. Bradley
Bob Bradley has been associated with the Hurricanes for over forty years. He first played with the Corps beginning in 1973 and marched through 1982. On several occasions he performed as a featured soloist. In 1983 and 1984 Bob served on the Board of Directors. Following a five year hiatus, re-energized, he returned to the Corps as Chairman of the Board of Directors, a position he held through 2004. In addition, Bob led the Corps as director in 1990 and 1992 and again in 1997. He remains as a member of the board to this day. In addition, Bob has personally shouldered the task of producing the Hurricanes long running annual show, “Fanfare,” for countless years.
Bobs drum corps career began, as a youth, when he joined the St. Aedan’s Emerald Cadets. In 1968 he joined the Milford Shoreliners, where he marched through 1972 before coming to the Hurricanes.
Bob is a proud recipient of the Hurricane’s prestigious “Heart and Soul Award.” In recognition of all that he has achieved on behalf of the Hurricanes and the drum corps community Bob has been honored by induction into the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame.
Thomas J. Brady *
Tom Brady journey as a member of the Hurricanes began at age 15 in 1956. This was the beginning of a 30+ year association with the Corps. His talent as a lead soprano was a welcome addition to the young upstart corps, as he was a key addition and contributor to the ascent of the Hurricanes in those early years. He played with the Corps through 1966…as a featured soloist on several occasions. Tom returned to the Hurricanes for the 1993 season and played through 2011.
Always a dedicated member, Tom set an example by his uncompromised work ethic. To this day Tom remains dedicated to his Corps. Beginning in 2012 he will lead the Corps onto the field as Captain of the Honor Guard as well as serving on the support staff wherever he may be needed. In addition, Tom was awarded the “Hurricane of the Year” honor in 2000.
By way of experience, Tom first started to play in 1949 with the Charter Oak Drum & Bugle Corps before joining the Robinson Rangers Drum & Bugle Corps. In between his stints with the Hurricanes, Tom was a member of the Conn. Alumni Corps from 1985 through 1992.
Mark C. Burel *
Mark was a stalwart in the Hurricane soprano line for fifteen years, from 1970 through 1984. Early on he displayed the grit it takes to be a part of a top quality corps by being named “Most Improved” in the horn line in 1974. He was famously recognized by his peers throughout his career as a man who approached life from a fun loving perspective…earning him the moniker “The Amazing Marko.” Not belying the humor however, was his work ethic as well as a tenacious competitive attitude…His goal and level of performance was consistently focused on excellence.
Mark’s interest in music began in the 3rd grade when he chose the trumpet in his school band. Recognizing his passion, his father enrolled him at the Bob Weller music school for private tutoring. In 1964 he joined the Stratford PAL Jr. Drum & Bugle Corps. From 1966 through 1968 he was a member of the Connecticut Royal Lancers and in 1969 he played with the Connecticut Yankees. While in high school, in addition to his drum corps activities, Mark participated in the jazz, concert and marching bands of Stratford High School
Peter F. Burns
Peter became a Hurricane in 1957 and quickly moved up the ranks from Riffle Bearer, to Color Guard Captain, to Assistant Drum Major. In addition to his on field duties, in 1960, he became Assistant Corps director and in 1964 was named Corps Director. His hardnosed tenacity and winning personality made Peter the perfect man for the job of leading the Hurricanes through the most successful period of their proud history, culminating in his last year, 1967, with an American Legion National Championship and a DCA World Championship.
Peter is also recognized as one of the founding fathers of the DCA, having taken an active part, along with representatives of six other corps, in forming and organizing the fledgling new circuit in 1963. He was active as well as influential in those formative years of the association and also served as the DCA’s first Secretary from 1963 through 1967.
Peter was a marching instructor to the Connecticut Royal Lancers as well as the Oxford Explorers. In addition, Peter was a judge and marching caption chairman of the Northeastern Judges Association through 1972. He serves to this day as an adjudicator for parades.
Vincent B. Cataudella
Vinny’s interest in music was piqued at an early age when he began learning to play the trumpet in elementary school. It was years later, in 2002, when he joined the Hurricanes that the depth of his passion was realized. His talent and dedication to the Corps would lead him to perform where he was needed the most. He has played soprano, 2002-2006, baritone 2007, trumpet, 2008-2010, 2015, and tuba, 2011-2012.
In addition to his career as a marching member, Vinny was also a member of the visual staff from 2008-2016, and proved to be an integral presence on the management/administrative team from 2012-2018. Beginning in 2014 Vinny was appointed to, and took a seat on the Hurricanes Board of Directors.
Vinny also enjoyed a DCI career simultaneous to his Hurricane career as he played with the Crossmen World Class Drum Corps from 2005-2007. He wintered with the Hurcs and excelled filling spots at critical times when most needed. He also spent four seasons (2006‐2009) as a visual instructor for the Norwalk High School Marching Band.
In 2018 Vinny earned an Ed.D in Higher Education Administration. In his professional life he is respectfully referred to as Dr. Cataudella, within his drum corps family he is respectfully referred to as Vinny….a Hurricane!
Raymond A. Clark
Ray Clark, or RayBoy as he is affectionately known, began his musical career as a member of the Stamford High School Marching Band. As luck would have it his Hurricane instructors of the time recruited him to the Corps in 1980. This was the beginning of a stellar Hurc career that totaled twenty one years, comprising fourteen years marching in the baritone line as well as two years serving as a marching tech. Ray’s final year marching came in 2000.
Ray also served on the Board of Directors of the Hurricane Alumni Association from it’s inception in 1998 thru 2004. In 2004 he organized and ran the 50th year reunion outing at Warsaw Park in Ansonia.
In addition, Ray has advocated for, and represented himself proudly as a Hurricane in the marching arts community as a drill writer and marching instructor at various high schools in the region including Westhill of Stamford, Danbury, Masuk of Monroe, Shelton, Rocky Hill, Brien McMahon of Norwalk and East Haven.
Edward J. Condon * Robert N. Woods *
Ed Condon and Bob Woods were lifelong friends from childhood. They later comprised a highly successful team as drill writers and instructors for the Hurricanes. It is therefore only fitting that, considering their history, legend and legacy that they be memorialized here as such…..the team known as “Condon & Woods.”
Ed and Bob began their drum corps careers in 1947 with the John H Collins fife, drum and bugle corps. In those early years, Ed and Bob, among others, were influential voices in transforming the Collins Post corps into the Hurricanes. Through the early years Ed played the baritone and Bob was a tenor drummer when the Hurricanes became a competitive field corps. They paid close attention to Hurc drill instructor, Vinny Ratford, and by the early 60’s formed the partnership that would bring them such revered recognition (as well as the Hurricanes). “Condon & Woods” introduced innovative drill designs that helped move marching styles of the day away from strict military patterns. By using color guard in the drill, they were able to create free flowing presentations with high audience appeal. During the years they were active with the Hurricanes, the Corps won virtually every top contest of the day, including the DCA championship, the World Open, American Legion and Dream championships as well as the Conn. State championship. They wrote and taught the Hurricanes marching through 1968, at one point winning the M&M caption 41 consecutive times. They also led the Hurricanes to top drill marks in the first four DCA championship contests. Under their tutelage, marching became the Corps “ace in the hole,” and was a major factor in the Corps success during their tenure. In recognition of their contribution to the activity, Ed and Bob rest as members of the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame.
Brenda J. Curran *
Brenda began her Hurricane career in a very distinctive year, 1977, the 1st year of female participation. She marched in the color guard through 1983 and in the later 80’s provided instruction to the Hurc guard.
Aside from her on field participation, Brenda volunteered to work the souvenir table, and eagerly embraced sewing projects on behalf of the Corps. She was recognized for her contributions by being named “Hurricane of the Year” for two consecutive years, 1980 and 1981.
Brenda’s drum corps career began in the Boston area where she was a color guard member of St. Jeans Jean-etts and later St. Mary’s Cardinals. She also taught the Stardusters, one of three corps that would later merge to form North Star. Brenda also instructed the Oxford Explorers, Skyquest as well as the Hurricanes in the late 80’s. She was also a color guard consultant for the Berlin, Naugatuck, Rocky Hill, and Shelton High School Marching Bands color guard programs.
John V. Curran Sr.
John Curran, widely known throughout the drum corps world as “Cupcakes,” came to the Hurricanes in 1974….the beginning of a long association with the Corps that includes 30 years of marching in the horn line and beyond. Cake’s performed for a number of years as a lead soprano as well as a lead baritone; it was just a matter of where he was needed most. In addition, he has operated the booster table, served as truck driver and as Quartermaster. John was honored as “Hurricane of the Year” for 1976. Following his playing career, he became a marching tech. for the Corps.
John’s drum corps involvement dates to his childhood in the Boston area, having marched with such corps as St. Kevin’s Emerald Knights, Cambridge Caballeros, the Princemen as well as the Boston Renegades. He has designed drill and instructed several high school color guards and bands and has been a staff member of World Guard International (WGI) since 1979.
John is a member of the Massachusetts Drum Corps Hall of Fame as well as an associate member of the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame.
Robert P. Daniels
Bobby “Rocky” Daniels first gained fame in the world of drum corps as the hugely popular and flashy drum major of the Hurricanes in the late 50’s through 1963. He led the Corps on the field with a flair that delighted drum corps fans everywhere. He solidified his status in Hurricane fame when, in 1969, he succeeded the great Condon & Woods as drill writer and instructor. What followed was the Corps second DCA championship title, due in large part to Rocky’s unique style of instruction and motivation. He wrote and instructed drill for the Corps in 1969 and 1970 and again in 1975 and 1976.
Bob taught many junior corps including the Milford Shoreliners, St. Aedan’s Emerald Cadets, the New London Surfers, and the Connecticut Yankees Sr. Drum and Bugle Corps.
In addition, Bob has also been recognized for his contributions to the betterment of the activity by induction as an associate member to the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame.
Anthony J. DeFrancesco *
Anthony DeFrancesco, or to all who knew him… “Tony D,” was one of the most popular and charismatic member of the Hurricanes during his time in the Corps in the 1960’s. Tony got his start in drum corps as a kid in 1957 with St. Rapheals Golden Buccaneers where he marched through 1960. In 1961 Tony joined the Hurricanes as a bass drummer before switching to cymbals. He found his niche however, when in 1965 Joe Genero took him under his wing and made Tony his assistant drum major. His firm, yet affable manner lent itself nicely to orderly and even paced rehearsals, thus freeing up Joe to devote his efforts towards performance issues.
Upon leaving the Corps at the end of 1968 Tony taught color guard to St. Ann’s Loyalaires and then to Notre Dame’s all girl corps, the ND-ETTS. In 1984 he was instrumental in forming the Connecticut Alumni Corps and served as its first director from 1984 through 1989. He was also one of the originators of the Hurricane Alumni Association in 1998 and served on its Board of directors until 2001.
Tony has been recognized for his contributions to the activity by induction, as an associate member, to the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame.
Alan J. DeSantis
Al got his start in the activity in 1965 as a member of the Connecticut Classics percussion section. He later joined St. Aedan’s Emerald Cadets of New Haven where he marched from 1970 through 1976. His senior corps experience began with the Rhode Island Matadors in 1977 and 1978 until he finally landed with the Hurricanes in 1979, and marched in the percussion section as a featured cymbalist until 1985. Upon returning to the Corps in 1990 he became widely known as “Big Al”, a familiar face of the Hurcs, for playing huge cymbals featured in the “Magnificent Seven” in every parade, exhibition and competition through 2003.
Being a talented handyman, Al has generously provided a wide array of assistance to the Hurcs such as building podiums and props, effecting truck repairs, and running fund raising efforts such as the highly profitable “haunted house” attraction in the 1980’s. His efforts on behalf of the Corps were recognized in 1991 when he was the recipient of the “Hurricane of the Year” award. His involvement and dedication to the Hurricanes has continued into the 2020’s.
Big Al has been a cornerstone of the Corps throughout his tenure, serving many roles including corps equipment manager, member of the Board of Directors and Director of the Hurricanes from 1999 through 2002. Al has also been honored through induction to the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame as an associate member.
David Dion
Dave Dion proved himself, over a Hurc career of twenty five years, to be a Hurricane of Hurricane’s. He joined the Corps in 1983 and played in the pit as well on snare and tenor for seven years before assuming drum major responsibilities through 1993. Following a stint as an instructor for the Boston Crusaders, he returned to the Corps in 1995 in the position of percussion arranger and later as brass arranger through 2008. In 2007, Dave put forth an astounding effort by arranging both the brass and percussion scores, serving as staff/show coordinator as well as donning a uniform, one more time, and leading the Corps, once again, as drum major.
Dave’s musical background comes by way of a BS in Music Performance from Western Connecticut State University and an MA in Music Composition and Music Education from UMASS Amherst. From 1990-1992 he was an arranging assistant for jazz great, Gerry Mulligan and from 1992 through 1995 was a Department Assistant for UMASS Amherst; instructing marching band, jazz ensembles, percussion ensembles, and teaching applied lessons. Dave became the Director of Music for the Wethersfield, Conn. Public School System beginning in 1995.
In addition, he has served as writer/arranger for numerous high school programs throughout Connecticut including Norwalk, Trumbull, Southington, Bethel, Danbury, Shelton, Stamford, West Hill, Brookfield, Newtown, West Haven, and Wethersfield.
In 1994, Dave was commissioned to compose live film score for a 1918 film “Within Our Gates” by the Massachusetts Multi-Cultural Society. He formed a publishing company in 2000, Dion Productions LLC, for scholastic jazz and field music. Dave has also pursued his passion for music by performing with jazz and event groups including Green Earring, the David Dion Quartet, Feedback, the Ives Symphony, and 42nd Street.
James E. Dugan Sr. *
Jim Dugan Sr. gained notoriety across Connecticut not simply as a popular, dynamic Hurricane, but rather through the many hundreds of people he imparted such a positive influence on as a percussion instructor in the 1960’s and 1970’s.
Jim’s introduction to drum corps came in his youth when he joined the Bradford Manor Corps in East Haven. He would later join the Connecticut Yankees, where he honed his skills under the great Earl Sturtze, through 1957. In 1958 Jim came to the Hurcs and for the next thirteen years exemplified the relentless pursuit of excellence that characterized and defined the Hurricanes of the 1960’s.
Jim was a popular arranger and instructed for several junior corps including; the Connecticut Classics, Milford Shoreliners, New London Surfers, Oxford Explorers, Centuriens, Seymour Vanguards’ as well as St. Aedan’s Emerald Cadets of New Haven. On the senior scene he also taught the Connecticut Yankees, Rhode Island Matadors, Connecticut Hurricanes as well as the Connecticut Alumni Corps
William F. Duquette *
Bill Duquette came to the Hurricanes in 1970 and played contra in those stellar horn lines through 1973. Subsequent to his playing career, he returned to the Corps as its Director and Asst. Drum Major, 1980-1984. He immediately outfitted the Corps with new uniforms and made key additions to an already excellent staff, resulting in some very competitive years, including winning the DCA Championship in 1981. Bill was once again active as the Administrative Head and staff coordinator in 1990 and 1992 and once again was an integral part in quickly guiding them back to prominence in the wake of some subpar seasons. He was named “Hurricane of the Year” for 1992.
In 2011, Bill was once again serving the Hurricanes…This time as the Webmaster, working tirelessly to totally revamp the Corps site. In addition, beginning in 2012 Bill was appointed as an advisor on the Board of Directors.
By way of experience, Bill’s drum corps career began in 1957 with Bridgeport’s PAL Cadets. He played baritone and later contra bass with the PAL through 1968. He has served as a marching instructor for such corps as the Connecticut Classics, New London Surfers and Notre Dame’s ND-Etts as well as the Bunnell High School Marching Band. Additionally, Bill has served as Director of The Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps of Georgia and as Co-Director for the Park City Pride in its inaugural year of 2003.
Raymond V. Fallon
Ray came to the Hurricanes in 1979 as the brass arranger; brass caption head, and instructor. He continued in that capacity until 1982, then again from 1985 – 1989, and for a short time in the early 1990’s. He not only assumed these roles, but did so with relish. Ray simply took ownership of his horn line and drove them towards excellence, not only through his expertise, but with energy and tenacity. Under his tutelage, the Hurricanes won the DCA championship title in 1981 and contended for it in 1980 and 1982. He wrote the famous Magnificent 7 solo that has assumed its place as part of the Hurricanes identity to this day, as well as countless other memorable musical arrangements. In 2014 Ray’s benevolence shone as he once again penned the Hurcs brass arrangements.
Ray’s introduction to drum corps and passion for music was born in 1960, at age 8, when he joined the Oceanside Legionaires on Long Island, where he played through 1969. His drum corps career was put on hold for a hitch with the US Army, but resumed in 1975 when he began marching as well as writing for the Sunrisers. Ray has also arranged and/or instructed for the following corps including; the Oceanside Legionaires, Herricks Police Boys’ Club, The Medford Grenadiers, The Bayonne Bridgemen, and Bridgemen Alumni Corps, the Shoreliners, Archer-Epler Musketeers, Bengal Lancers, Yankee Rebels, Crossmen, Boston Crusaders, and the Boston Crusaders Alumni Corps, also, the Music Express and Reilly Raiders of Penn. In addition, he has taught many bands including: Ridley Park HS (Pa.), Norwalk HS, Naugatuck HS, and East Lyme HS in Connecticut.
Ray received a Bachelor of Music from the University of Massachusetts, Boston, and has studied Music Competition with David Patterson, Ph.D. Harvard. He has served as an adjudicator for music as a member of the National Judges Association, and CMBC. He is also a member of the Sunrisers Hall of Fame, the Buglers Hall of Fame as well as the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame.
Robert P. Findley *
Bob Findley began his long involvement with drum corps and the marching arts in the late 1950s as a drummer with St. Ann’s drum and bugle corps in Bridgeport Conn. He enlisted in the US Army (1963-1966) and upon his return home, joined the Hurricanes in 1967. As a member of the drum line, he enjoyed of two DCA championship seasons (‘67&’69). Bob became an assistant drum major in 1972, a position he held through 1976.
Bob was also the lead drum major for the Connecticut Yankees, Rhode Island Matadors, Connecticut Alumni and the Park City Pride Alumni Corps. He began teaching in 1969 and became a drill writer and show designer for many drum corps, high school bands and winter color guards along the East Coast as well as the Midwest, producing many titles and awards. In addition to these continuing commitments, Bob also served as the visual coordinator and drum major of the Park City Pride Alumni Corps.
Bob is a member of the Matadors Hall of Fame as well as the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame. In 2014 he was appointed Vice President of the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame.
John M. Fisher
John, or as he is more commonly known, Fish, began his musical career in middle school in Seymour Conn. It didn’t take long for the clarinet to become boring for him, so when he saw the Oxford Explorers practicing in 1963, he knew immediately that he wanted to be part of that “sound.” He joined the Explorers and marched with them through the 1965 season. Following that season Fish joined the Hurricanes and played in the baritone line through 1974. In 1975 he was pressed into service in the contra line were he stayed until his last competition at the close of 1981.
Fish’s Hurricane resume also includes: twenty nine years sitting on the Board of Directors, 1973-1977, 1998-2004, and 2006-2022. He was a founding member of, as well as first President of the Hurricane’s Alumni Association from 1998 through 2004. Additionally, he served four years assisting in M&M instruction, 1977-1980. Beginning in 2009 Fish took on the duties as the Corps first Historian. He has chronicled an all-encompassing history of the Corps first 80+ years of existence and compiled and authored a complete library of biographies for all of the members of the Hurricanes Hall of Fame as well as assembling an archive of scores, photos and an extensive audio and video library. As the Historian, he has served as an advisor to the Board of Directors since 2007. In 2019 he authored and published a pictorial history of the corps, titled simply; “Connecticut Hurricanes Drum and Bugle Corps”
Fish is proud to be one of only six Hurricanes, along with Olderman, Golder, Chop, DePatra and LaBonte, to have marched in three DCA title winning years…1967, 1969, and 1981. . In addition to the Hurricanes Hall of Fame, he is an inductee to the Connecticut Alumni Hall of Fame as well as an associate in the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame. He is also a proud recipient of the Hurricane’s prestigious “Heart and Soul Award.”
Raymond J. Flowers
Raymond Flowers began a Hurricane career, which would span parts of four decades, shortly after his discharge from the US Navy in 1967. Ray…or “Rosey,” as he is known by all, played tenor drum as well as tympani in those mighty Ray Luedee lines from 1968 thru 1974. In 1975 Rosey acted on a desire and switched to the horn line. He pushed himself to learn and ultimately did just fine…playing baritone in those great Genero lines of 1975 and 1976. After a hiatus, Rosey, true to his colors, returned to bolster a Hurricane Corps desperate for membership in 1988 and played in the horn line thru 1993.
Throughout his tenure, and especially during those lean years of the late 1980’s, Rosey was a strong advocate for the Corps, lending himself to recruitment as well as nurturing a positive outlook to those around him. Always a strong presence with a large personality, Rosey delivered intangible leadership as a driver and motivator from within the ranks.
Rosey’s career began as a tenor drummer with the Danbury Drum Corps, 1957-1960. In 1961 he played with the Conn. Yankees and in 1963-1967 served in the Navy. While in the service and stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Base, he was afforded the opportunity to do several stand-in performances with the Chicago Cavaliers.
As an instructor, Rosey has taught percussion with the Stateliners, the Connecticut Classics of East Haven Conn. and the ND-ETTS of Bridgeport Conn. In addition he’s instructed marching with the Norwalk Conn. and Brien McMahon High School Marching Bands.
Scott L. Friend
Scott joined the Hurricanes in 1985 and became an assistant Brass instructor with fellow Hurc hall of famer, Ray Fallon. Scott was a soloist in every show year he ever marched. He has been involved with the Hurricanes for a number of years and has always provided a helping hand from an instructional perspective when needed since 1985.
Scott has been involved in the drum corps activity since 1966 beginning with the Enfield Sabers of Conn. He played flugel horn with the St. George Olympians, as well as the Targets, both of Springfield, Mass. Scott was also a Bugler for the U.S. Navy Recruit Drum Corps.
While in college, Scott joined the RI. Matadors in 1979 and immediately became one of their lead soloists playing with the likes of the famed Jimmy Centorino and Richie Price. He also served the Matadors as an assistant instructor and Brass Tech.
Scott’s accomplishments include: Several top five finishes as well as two first place medals for ensemble performance at the DCA individual & ensemble contest, “Horn Man of the Year” of the Matadors in 1982, Election to the Matadors Hall of Fame in 1998 and to the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame as an associate member.. Scott has written for and instructed the Marksmen of Springfield Mass., the RI. Matadors and the Conn. Hurricanes, as well as holding the position of Band Director and Team Leader of Fine Arts at Brookfield HS in Brookfield Conn.
Theodore M. Furman
Ted Furman came to the Hurricanes in the 1978 and played in the contra line through 1983, also garnering a DCA championship as a member of the 1981 Hurricanes. Following a six year hitch in the United States Marine Corps, Teddy stayed close to home and played with the Westchester Brassmen from 1990 through 1993. In 1994 he returned to his beloved Hurricanes where he continued as a stalwart member of the contra/tuba line through 2010. For five of those years Teddy demonstrated a willingness to do whatever was needed by serving as a quartermaster and truck driver from 2005-2009 in addition to his marching commitment.
For 24 years Ted’s focus was excellence and endurance, as well as his willingness to mentor the many people he played with. He was forced to give up his marching career following the 2010 season due to a bum knee…this setback was hardly the end of his long Hurricane career as he quickly moved onto the visual staff as the tuba line tech beginning in 2011 through 2012.
Teddy’s drum corps experience also includes his beginning with the Connecticut Stateliners, from 1970-1974 as well as the aforementioned Westchester Brassmen, 1990-1993. In addition he has served as a marching instructor for the Stamford High School Band, 2000-2002 and Brian McMahon High School Band in 2011.
Thomas A. Gabianelli *
Tom “Gabby” Gabianelli is a natural born Hurricane. His father, also known as “Gabby”, first joined the Corps in 1940, so as one would presume, some of his earliest memories were centered on drum corps. Gabby’s early interest drew him to become a drummer, which he began learning through participation in the Seymour Middle School band program. In 1963 he joined the Oxford Explorers and for two years honed his drumming under the tutelage of Jim Dugan Sr., and in 1965 he moved to the Connecticut Royal Lancers were he began a long association with Hall of Fame instructor Ray Luedee. Tom made the jump to the Hurricanes in 1966. Shortly thereafter his Hurc career was put on hold by a four year hitch in the US Navy. Upon discharge, he returned to the Corps and drummed in those fabulous Luedee lines of the 70’s for six years, through 1976.
In 1977 Tom returned to a Corps in transition, assuming a duel role as business manager as well as assistant director and was instrumental in formulating a re-building plan. He became Director for 1978 and remained on the Board of Directors through 1983. Tom returned to the Corps in 2000 playing pit percussion and in 2003-2004 he played in the horn line. He was named “Hurricane of the Year” for 2004. In 2003, Gabby again returned to the Board table and was elevated to Chairman of the Hurricanes Board beginning in 2005. He immediately got to work in and undertook a course that, in his vision, would return the Hurricanes to a place of prominence in the drum corps world. By 2007 the Corps had been outfitted with new drums and pit equipment, new horns and new uniforms. His revamping of the organization, from top to bottom, poised the Corps for success well into the future and beyond.
With the conclusion of 2011 Gabby stepped down as Chairman of the Board of Directors, though he still remains a member of the board, serving as Secretary. His contributions towards the betterment of the Hurricanes now spans six decades. In recognition of his dedicated efforts Gabby has been inducted into the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame as an associate member. Gabby is also a proud recipient of the Hurricane’s prestigious “Heart and Soul Award.”
Stephen J. Gangi
Stephen came to the Hurcs for the 1979 season and became a mainstay and influential presence in the Corps for two decades, culminating in 1998! Within a short time after joining, he was given the nickname of “Fruit Loops”…or to most, he was simply known as Loops.
His talent as a musician placed him in the lead baritone line as well as a featured soloist. Loops proved himself to be the consummate team player in the heady days of the early 80’s and more so during the lean years that followed. He left his comfort zone to play wherever he was needed most; baritone, soprano or contra bass. Loops epitomized the Hurricane toughness displayed by the nucleus of the Corps during those challenging years…that tenacious refusal to give in or give up. The reward was in being a part of the Hurricane corps that reemerged as a DCA power in the 90’s. Two decades fraught with highs & lows….A satisfying journey?...Yes!
Stephens’ introduction to music & marching began with the North Haven Ct. Fife & Drum Corps. He later played in the North Haven HS Band, St. Peters Fife Drum & Bugle Corps of Torrington, Ct. as well as the Northeastern University Marching Band. Subsequent to his Hurricane career, Steve played with the Ct. Alumni Corps and the Matador Alumni Corps of RI.
As a brass and/or marching instructor Stephen has taught the Brian McMahon, Norwalk, Naugatuck, Brookfield and Branford High School Bands…all of Conn….The 7th. Regiment Drum & Bugle Corps of New London, Ct., the Conn. Classics, East Haven Ct. as well as the Prospect, Oakville-Watertown and Westbury of Watertown Fife and Drum Corps…all of Conn.
Joseph P. Genero *
Joe Genero’s Hurricane career began in 1957 when he took on the daunting task of transforming this upstart, inexperienced corps into the top caliber type corps he envisioned. Having had the experience of playing with the New York Skyliners, as well as arranging for, and teaching the Hawthorne Caballeros, Joe knew full well the commitment, and hard work that went into producing such a corps. It didn’t take long for Joe to impart his tenacious, competitive mindset on the Hurricanes, and all of the hard work and determination bore fruit in the 60’s with Northeastern Circuit Championships in 62’ & 63’as well as winning the World Open Championship in 64’. Behind Joe Genero, the Hurricanes also captured the American Legion National Championship in 67’ and the Drum Corps Associates World Title in 67’ & 69’.
Beginning in 1964 Joe brought the Hurricanes onto the field as their drum major, leading with fire in his eye, and a passion for bringing out his music in a style that earned him the moniker of “Jumpin Joe.” His show selections and arrangements were once described in an article as having “snap, crackle, and pop”, and throughout his tenure as musical director of the corps, (57’- 76’), the Hurricanes were contenders, and enthusiastically received wherever they performed.
Joe also arranged and taught music with several well-known junior corps including St. Vincent’s of Bayonne, St. Lucy’s of Newark, The Milford Shoreliners, The Emerald Cadets of New Haven, and St. Raphael’s Golden Buccaneers of Bridgeport. He also arranged music for senior corps, including the Caballeros, The Amboy Dukes, The Ballantine Brewers, New Bedford Whalers, and the RI. Matadors.
In recognition of his fabulous body of work, Joe was inducted into the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame in 1978. In addition, Joe is a member of the Buglers Hall of Fame.
Robert L. Glovna *
Bob began his love of marching music at age 10 as a trumpet player for the Madison School Band of Bridgeport in 1955. Soon after, he witnessed the Barnum Festival’s “Champions on Parade”, and was inspired to join Bridgeport’s own St. Raphael’s Golden Buccaneers Jr. Corps where he honed his craft as a lead soprano player through 1960. In 1961 he joined the Hurricanes, a fortunate time, as he enjoyed Championship status for much of that decade. In 1970 Bob was tapped as the new Hurricane Director and Business Manager, a post he maintained through 1976. Bob once again returned to the Hurricanes from 1986 through 1989 as Business Manager.
In addition to his long career with the Hurricanes, Bob served as vice president of Drum Corps Associates (DCA) from 1975 through 1983. He also served as Musical Chairmen for the Barnum Festival’s Champions on Parade from 1975 to 1980, serving as grand marshal in 1980. In 2005 Bob became Director and Business Mgr. of Bridgeport’s popular Park City Pride Alumni Corps.
Bob was inducted into the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame in 1979. In 2007 he became president of that institution. Bob is also a proud recipient of the Hurricane’s prestigious “Heart and Soul Award.” Throughout his long involvement in the world of drum corps, Bob Glovna has demonstrated time and again his willingness to step forward, roll up his sleeves, and get the job done.
John J. Glynn *
Johnny Glynn, aka “the Redhead” was a player as solid as they come, playing lead in the Hurc soprano line for twenty three years. Red’s interest in music began in grade school, St. Aedan’s, where he learned to play the clarinet for the school band. Upon exposure to the St. Aedan’s sponsored drum corps, the Emerald Cadets, the clarinet quickly became a memory and his life long passion for drum corps was born. He played with St. Aedan’s from 1965 through 1970 under the auspices of the likes of Joe Genero, Art Hlywa and Pepe Notaro.
In 1971, at age 15, John became a Hurricane, embarking on a career that would see him as a featured soloist many times. He marched from 1971 through 1985 and after missing a year played from 1987 through 1995. Always the model citizen, the Redhead was honored as such with the “Hurricane of the Year” award in 1990.
In addition to his on field contributions, John mentored the soprano line as an instructor for several years. He also sat on the Board of Directors from 1988 through 1993 and has again joined the board beginning the 2010 season.
Curtis W. Golder
Curt Golder began his marching career with a small local group in northwest Connecticut…The Roxbury Strutters. He was so enthralled by the experience that he couldn’t wait to join the Hurricanes and finally found his way to Shelton at the tender age of 15. Curt was fortunate in that he marched for 22 years, from 1967 through 1989 …a tenure far longer than the average.
Curt was an exemplary Hurricane for all of those years and wore many hats throughout his distinguished career, among them; lead soprano, featured soloist, assistant drum major and a brass instructor that was an inspiration to all those around him.
Curt was named “Hurricane of the Year” in 1975 and is one of six Hurricanes, along with Fisher, Olderman, Chop, DePatra and LaBonte, to have marched in three DCA championship years, (1967, 69’ and 81’)
Curt would never accept any less than excellence and the best effort from himself, and that’s exactly what he delivered….for every one of those 22 years!
John F. Gore *
John Gore, affectionately known as “Igor” came to the Hurricanes with the renowned “Boston crew” in 1973. He proved to be a disciplined and excellent performer, playing in the melophone line for an amazing 23 years (1973-1995). True to his commitment, Igor commuted from Boston for those 23 years and was steady and relentless in his pursuit of perfection, quietly inspiring those around him by example.
John’s interest in drum corps began in his youth when he joined the Assumption Corps of East Boston. He would later play with the Cambridge Caballeros and then the Renegades of Boston before becoming a Hurricane. In the wake of his Hurc career, Igor continued participating, on a less demanding level, with Boston area corps on the alumni scene, playing with such corps as the 27th Lancers, the Light Brigade, St. Kevins Emerald Knights and the Legends of Drum Corps from Maulden, Mass.
In addition to playing, John also taught marching to organizations such as Oliver Ames HS from Easton, Mass. and Stoughton HS from Stoughton, Mass. as well as several winter guards. John is also a member of the Massachusetts Drum Corps Hall of Fame.
Thomas J. Greenhalgh
Thomas Greenhalgh’s love of music began at an early age when he first picked up a trumpet in the 4th grade. He pursued that interest and sharpened his skills through high school in New London Connecticut and knew nothing about drum corps….that is, until his friend, and Hurc, C.J. Johnson, talked him into coming to the Valley in 1997 to check out the Hurricanes….the rest, as they say is history!
Since 1997 Thomas has established himself as the rock of the horn line. He has served as the section leader of the trumpet line for several years and has also earned several accolades throughout his Hurricane career, among them; Most Improved Marcher 1997, Distinguished Service Brass Award 2013, Hurricane of the Year 2014, Brass MVP Award 2016, Visual MVP Award 2016. Thomas has performed numerous feature solos, and has shined on the signature Magnificent Seven solo since 2007.
Thomas has also taught the Cheshire High School Marching Band and played with the UConn Marching Band. His quiet leadership, manifested through his dedication, attitude, exemplary presence and passion for the activity have been a tremendous asset for over two decades. Having had no affiliation with any other drum corps, Thomas is truly….pure Hurricane!
Arthur T. Hlywa
Art came to the Hurricanes at age 16 in 1954. He was truly the only real musician in the Corps during its formative years, and he assisted first, Oscar Knablin, then Joe Genero in training the horn line throughout his 16 year career with the Hurricanes. Aside from being the lead soloist for the Corps during his tenure, Art has been a highly regarded horn instructor in Connecticut for over 50 years, giving instruction to hundreds of “street” players with no previous experience. Between 1957 and 1973 Art taught many of Connecticut’s top junior corps including the Golden Buccaneers, Royal Lancers, Derby Cyclones, Oxford Explorers, Stateliners, Conn. Classics, Trumbull Troubadours, and the Milford Shoreliners, as well as the Connecticut Yankees.
When Art’s career performing with the Hurricanes ended he stayed close to his horn, and for several years played professionally as a member of the Dick Wailonis Band. When the alumni faction of drum corps took off in the mid 1980’s Art was right there…as a charter member and brass instructor of the Connecticut Alumni and subsequent to that was also a charter member as well as brass instructor for the Park City Pride.
Art judged brass captions for the Northeastern Judges Association from 1968-1973 and was also a founding member, as well as Vice President (6 yrs) of the Hurricanes Alumni Association. In his capacity with the Alumni Association Art ran a number of successful golf tournaments, raising several thousand dollars that was used to support the Hurricanes. In addition to his well deserved place in the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame, he is also a member of the Conn. Alumni Hall of Fame and is a charter member of the Buglers Hall of Fame.
Theresa Sekellick Hunter
Terry joined the Hurricanes in the historically significant year of 1977. By taking on the challenge of adapting to, and embracing the adjustments confronting the previously all male corps Terry quickly emerged as a leader… a role for which she was well suited. She, in effect, mentored the color guard for seven years, through her relentless pursuit of perfection as well asby her tough as nails work ethic. Her exemplary presence and demonstrated leadership earned her captaincy of the guard in the early 80’s.
Terry came to the Corps via the Seymour Vanguards. She also marched simultaneously with the championship, and renowned Skylarks Color Guard.
Terry was recognized and commended early in her career as the recipient of the “Hurricane of the Year” award for 1979. The influence and standard of excellence demonstrated by Terry has surely carried through to the many top ranked Hurricane Guards since that inaugural coed year.
Eugene A. Imperato *
Gene Imperato is considered to be the founder of the Connecticut Hurricanes Drum & Bugle Corps. He played the fife as an original member of the John H Collins Post Fife Drum & Bugle Corps in 1932 and in 1941 he assumed directorship of the Corps. He listened to the members in the early 50’s and weighed their building desire to become a competitive Drum & Bugle Corps, thus in 1954, in a back room meeting, (at his Pioneer Auto in Derby Conn.) Gene began the transformation of the Corps into a competitive marching and maneuvering unit that would become known as the Connecticut Hurricanes.
It was under his guidance that the Corps embarked on its new beginning as well as establishing its long standing commitment to engage the finest instructors in the country in its never ending quest of excellence.
The nickname Hurricanes came about following a rambunctious weekend at the American Legion Nationals in 1951 Miami. In 1955 the infamous Hurricanes Connie & Diane, two vicious storms that ripped through Connecticut within a week of each other, resulting in widespread devastation, provided the impetus to rename the newly competitive drum corps after that powerful event. It was Gene who acted on the inspiration and incorporated the rebirth of the Collins Post Corps, rebranding it into the Connecticut Hurricanes.
Gene was the 1st Director of the revamped corps and designed the first Hurricane uniform… black, with black sash and a silver lightning bolt. The sashes were hand sewn with the lightning bolt that has perpetuated as the Hurricanes identity to this day.
Gene remained director of the corps until the late 1950’s when the corps stormed onto the senior circuit becoming highly competitive.
Arnold F. Juliano
Arnie’s involvement in drum corps began in 1957 when he first saw the PAL Cadets in the local Memorial Day parade in Bridgeport. He was instantly captivated by the sound and the uniforms…within a week, he was a member. Early on he was taught to play the soprano by Chris “Pop” Ruge, the patriarch of the PAL, and soon after switched to the French horn. A stalwart member of the PAL throughout the 60’s, Arnie and his fellow Cadets had made a pact… that they would remain with the corps until they turned twenty one. True to his word, although aching to become a Hurricane, Arnie marched with the PAL until his 21st birthday…only then, would he become a Hurricane for the 1968 season.
As he had demonstrated with the PAL, Arnie’s dedication to the Corps and fellow members proved to be beyond reproach. He wore many hats for the Hurricanes, among them, aside from marching in the line on the French horn, mellophone or soprano; Corps treasurer, Asst. Director, M&M instructor and for 1977, Director. Faced with the prospect of not fielding a corps in 1977, Arnie along with Tom Gabianelli, formulated a plan to move the Corps forward. The controversial centerpiece of this plan was in breaking the gender barrier by allowing the Corps to become co-ed.
Arnie was a key member of many highly competitive and championship seasons, but perhaps his proudest moment came after his active involvement…with the Hurricanes being crowned as DCA Champions in 1981…the fruition of those well laid plans in 1977.
Michael J. Kelly *
Mickey Kelly came to the Hurricanes in 1976 as a guard instructor. He returned to the Corps in this capacity from 1979 through 1983 and during that time, the Hurcs guard took 4 DCA championship guard trophies. He then returned to the Corps as show coordinator from 1990 – 1994. Mickey’s personal performance history was one of notoriety, particularly for precision and innovative daring. This early experience certainly laid the cornerstone for Mickey’s unique and confident style of teaching…a style that got the most, and then some, out of each and every member, thus setting a standard that prevails to this day with the Hurricane guard…a never ending quest , through creativity and excellence, to be the best.
Mickey’s drum corps marching days began with the St. Raphael’s Musketeers and then St. Raphael’s Golden Buccaneers in the 1960’s.He also marched with the O.L.P.H. Ridgemen (NY). He began teaching at age 15 with St. Raphael’s Marionettes. He also founded the Skylark color guard in 1969…they eventually became world champions. Mickey has taught numerous corps including: the Caballeros and Bushwackers, the Milford Shoreliners, Bengal Lancers, Firettes, Fairfield Colonades, the Stateliners, Emerald Cadets, Emerald Buccaneers, Imperial Knights, Hawthorne Muchachos, as well as the 27th Lancers and Garfield Cadets. He has taught many high schools around the country including the award winning Cheshire HS Marching Band for many years. He was Chief Judge for WGI (1985 – 1992) and as a member of the National Judges Association has served as an adjudicator for the DCA. Mickey has been inducted into the WGI Hall of Fame as well as the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame.
Charles F. King
Charlie’s interest in music began many years ago when he learned to play the trumpet at James Monroe High School in Bronx, NY. It wasn’t until 1955 when he saw his first drum corps show in Kingston NY that he became a fan and knew someday he would join this activity.
In 1976, following four years of service in the US Marine Corps, Charlie moved to Connecticut and gravitated to the Hurricanes. He played soprano in 1976 and 1977, moved to the baritone line for 1978 and 1979 and played the contra bass from 1980 through 1984 & 1988.
Charlie was appointed to the Hurricanes Board of Directors in 1984 and held that position for 26 years, through 2009. He is currently associated with the board in an advisory capacity. In addition, Charlie operated the Hurcs souvenir table from 1991 through 2001, generating thousands of dollars to the benefit of the Corps. In 2007, He became President of the Hurricane Alumni Association in 2005.
Charlie’s drum corps involvement has gone beyond his beloved Hurcs…In 2003 he joined the Connecticut Alumni corps and in 2009 was unanimously elected their Director. He has also volunteered for DCA coordinating the souvenir courts at various shows since 2005
Charlie has been recognized and honored as an associate member of the World Drum Corp Hall of Fame.
Maurice D. Knox Jr.
Moe Knox’s interest in marching and music trace back to 1946 when he joined the Boy Scout Troop 14 Trumpet Band of Milford Conn. as a bass drummer. He later played bass drum and cymbals in the Milford High School Band. Upon graduation from high school in 1953, Moe signed up with the US Navy and played in the Navy Recruit Drum & Bugle Corps. Subsequent to his Navy hitch, Moe returned to Connecticut and joined the Hurricanes in 1958, however, he arrived too late to march the field corps that year and spent his time taking photos of the Corps instead. He eventually did march in the Hurricanes drum line from 1959 through 1960. During those few seasons with the corps, Moe became the first drum corps photographer. He initially shot mostly Hurricane images as well as pictures of the Connecticut Yankees, where his brother in-law played. Following his Hurc career, he progressed to snapping pictures of just about every corps anyone has ever heard of. His archives brim with thousands of pictures of drum corps history. Moe has methodically chronicled this great activity of ours since his first picture of any corps (the Hurcs) in 1958.
Moe is arguably the most well known “unknown” drum corps personality, having been plying his trade for over fifty years. During this time he has served as lead photographer for the original Drum Corps News (1964) and has been on staff on with Drum Corps World since 1974. It is estimated that Moe has shot in excess of 50,000 drum corps photos during his long career in drum corps photography. Just about everyone who has ever marched owns a Moe Knox photo to preserve their memories. He is the pre-eminent chronicler of how the drum corps activity has changed over his five decades on the job.
Moe has been inducted into the Pennsylvania Drum Corps Hall of Fame and the New Jersey Drum Corps Hall of Fame. His invaluable photos are memorialized in the recently published books….”The History of Drum & Bugle Corps” and a pictorial history titled, “Connecticut Hurricanes Drum and Bugle Corps”
Robert M. Kogut
Bob started his marching career in 1968 with the Oxford Explorers. In 1985 he decided to follow his instructors and joined the Hurricanes as a snare drummer. He has had a number of positions since then, percussion writer and instructor, show coordinator and pit instructor. Representing the Hurricanes, Bob has been DCA individual mallet champion three times and ensemble and duet champion twice.
Bob has an M.A. in Music Education from Western Conn State University. He is the CMEA All-State head percussion adjudicator and percussion coordinator. Bob has also done a number of workshops on starting a percussion ensemble and mallets selection on a budget at the All-State conventions.
Beside having many great years performing with the Hurricanes, 85’-89’, 93’-97’and 03’-07’ Bob has stepped in as a consultant and has instructed the Corps many times, most recently in 2015. He has also written and taught for East Lyme H.S., Fitch H.S., Central Conn University Marching Band, and Gilbert School. Bob was the percussion instructor at Naugatuck H.S. for twenty years and is the current Director of Bands at Naugatuck H.S. in Conn. The Naugatuck Winter percussion Ensembles has had local and national success. They are the 99’-03’ winter percussion Champions, 02’- 06’ MAC Winter percussion Concert Open Champs. Also being a finalist in 03’ and 05’ as well as a Bronze medalist in 07’. The ensemble is the first from Connecticut to place in the top three in national competition, a tribute to Bob’s talent and teaching skill.
Victor T. Kulinski Jr.
Vic Kulinski came to the Hurricanes in 1974 and played in the snare line for ten years before becoming Drum Major and subsequently Corps Director from 1986-1989. Vic was a talented drummer and devoted member, though he made his greatest contribution during his tenure as director. He took over the Corps in decline and while faced with the real possibility of going inactive, he instead worked tirelessly, at the helm for four years, re-building.
Vic’s introduction to drum corps came at the age of eight. He played with Carey’s Cadets, the Connecticut Royal Lancers and the Oxford Explorers as a junior. Following his Hurricane career, Vic moved to Florida where he co-founded Heat Wave of Orlando, also serving as director and drum major. He later moved on to the Atlanta, Ga. CorpsVets where he served as a percussion instructor, drum major and member of the Board of Directors. In addition, Vic has performed as a percussionist at Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando and has been featured in commercials for the Toronto Lottery as well as Eckards Pharmacy. In individual competition, Vic has garnered numerous awards in percussion. He has placed 1st on snare, multi tenor and bass drum three times at the Shriner’s National Convention as well as winning the National Invitational Individual Championship twice. Following his competitive career he continued to perform with the Bayonne Bridgemen Alumni Corps.
In addition to Heat Wave and the CorpsVets, Vic has arranged and instructed percussion for the Norwalk and Shelton High School Marching Bands in Connecticut as well as Cypress Creek, Boone and Middleburg High Schools in Florida. He has also served as director and arranger for Riptide Indoor Percussion of Jacksonville, Fla. as well as Central Region Director for the Florida Federation of Color Guards. In recognition of his lifelong dedication and accomplishment, Vic has been honored through induction to the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame.
Raymond P. Luedee *
Ray Luedee came to the Hurricanes in 1965 and took over a championship level drum line and simply made them better. He left an indelible mark in the Hurricane and DCA record books by producing top lines year after year. Having learned under the “Dean of drumming,” Earl Sturtze, Ray kicked it up a notch with the Hurcs, arranging, teaching and setting the tone by playing in his lines, with what has been described as an “aggressive rudimental style”. The Hurricane drum lines during Ray’s tenure were the gold standard of excellence. He lead the Corps percussion section, by being a brilliant motivator, and by imparting to his charges an unparalleled work ethic and spirit, from 1965 through 1973 and again in 1975 through 1977.
Ray’s performance history began in 1956 with the Connecticut Yankees. He marched as a snare for them through 1964 before bringing his considerable talents to the Hurricanes. He also taught many corps, junior and senior, throughout the area including the Connecticut Royal Lancers, St. Raphael’s Golden Buccaneers, Stateliners, Bridgeport’s ND-Ett’s, and the New Bedford Whalers among others. Ray was a member of the Northeastern Judging association in the Percussion and general effect captions and was also involved in numerous percussion clinics for drum corps, bands and judging associations. In addition Ray was the Connecticut State Individual Snare Drum champion for six consecutive years.
In recognition of his accomplishments and contributions to the world of drum corps, Ray has been honored and recognized through induction to the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame.
Lawrence W. MacLennan *
When Larry MacLennan became a Hurricane in 1977 his presence had an immediate impact. He played a very strong lead soprano that solidified and added much needed depth to the horn line in this pivotal season of transition. This was only the beginning of a stellar Hurricane career that would include a Championship in 1981 and span parts of three decades.
From 1977 through 1984 he was an exemplary member on every level… demonstrating commitment, dedication, passion, pride and perseverance as well as a talent that saw him highlighted as a featured soloist on several occasions. In 1990 Larry answered the call and returned to the Corps to once again provide his brand of veteran leadership and to bolster the horn line, as the Hurricanes began their return prominence, marching through 1992.
By way of experience, Larry, at age 11, was recruited into New Haven’s St. Aeden’s Emerald Cadets in1967 where he learned to play his soprano under the tutelage of a trio of drum corps greats…Art Hlywa, Joe Genero and Pepe Notaro. He flourished under their guidance and their influence served him well…he was soon performing as a featured soloist. Larry played with St. Aedan’s through 1975 and subsequently, in 1976, played with the merged corps of the Emerald Buccaneers.
Bernard F. Malesky
Bernie’s Hurricane career began in 1982 as a member of the snare line. He then served as a percussion tech through 1990 and returned to the Corps in that capacity in 1995. Bernie has worn many hats for the Hurricanes over the years, among them; Percussion Tech, Percussion Caption Head, Staff Coordinator, Assistant Director and in 2003 he was named Corps Director and Program Director. Beginning in 2010 Bernie assumed the position of Vice President of Corps Operations and in 2012 became President of the Hurricanes.
Although a talented drummer, Bernie’s passion lies in leadership. He has been tireless in producing many quality seasons for the Corps and has been a key figure guiding the Hurricanes through their ascendancy of the late 2000’s. Through the development of various vehicles by which membership can offset dues requirements, he has provided needed relief to countless members as well as enhancing the recruitment program.
At the age of 7 he joined the Thunderbolts in Bridgeport. He would later move on to St. Raphael’s Golden Buccaneers, the Emerald Buccaneers and the Bengal Lancers before coming to the Hurcs. In addition, Bernie has instructed several organizations in the role of Percussion Tech as well as Percussion Head including; the Bengal Lancers, the Norwalk Hot Shots, the Fairfield Tornados, Brookfield High School, Andrew Warde and Ludlow High Schools of Fairfield, Brien McMahon High School, and Stamford’s winter percussion program. In addition, since 1991, Bernie has enjoyed a long association with the Norwalk High School Marching Band as Percussion Caption Head as well as instructing on the Winter Guard visual and Winter Percussion staffs. Throughout his tenure, Norwalk has built a reputation of excellence, having garnered awards at both the local and National levels.
George G. Maloney
George Maloney came to the Hurricanes in 1984 and immediately imparted a positive influence via the many hats he wore. From 1984-1997 he served at times as Drum Major, marching instructor and Personal director. He returned to the Corps as a marching tech in 2013-2014 and once again in 2017-2018 as a marching tech/visual consultant. Beginning in 2018 George was appointed to serve on the Hurricanes Board of Directors.
George’s drum corps career began at the age of thirteen in 1969. His father had given his aimless son an ultimatum; join the Boy Scouts or join the drum corps…George made the decision to try drum corps, and he would never regret it. He would learn to play the soprano bugle with the Nutmeg Rangers of New Britain and subsequently would march with the Golden Crusaders of Southington, the Emerald Cadets of New Haven and then go on to play lead soprano with the Sacramento, Ca. Freelancers in 1977, also serving as Drum Major for them in his age out year of 1978.
Beginning in 1984 George began a long career teaching, writing, consulting, and/or directing numerous school marching band and winter guard programs. He has long advocated for the Hurricanes through his association with the following; the Norwalk, Trumbull, Rocky Hill, Southington, Glastonbury, Brookfield, Berlin, Bunnell, Wolcott, and Cheshire High School programs in addition to the University of Connecticut, Sacred Heart University, and the United States Coast Guard Academy.
Rich Mastrioani
Rich Mastrioani’s Hurricane career is a unique example of someone coming to the Corps with no prior experience and through dedication, hard work and a focus on excellence has had a positive impact with the Corps spanning four decades.
He was a member of the color guard from 1971 through 1976. With the switch to coed in 1977 and the Hurcs in desperate need of horns, Rich transferred to the baritone line. Richie not only became a proficient player but for seven years, 1977-1981 & 1983-1984, was a bulldog in the line, leading with his steadfast work ethic.
He returned to the Corps from 1987-1994 as a marching tech. Rich’s performance and dedication led to his being named “Hurricane of the Year” in 1993 and he subsequently assumed the Directorship of the Hurricanes for the 1995 and 1996 seasons. Rich returned as a marching tech in 1999 and continued in that role to through 2010. He also served on the board of Directors in 2003-2004.
Paul E. Mayer
In 1970 Paul Mayer became a Hurricane and was a standout player in the soprano line through 1973. His arrival to the Corps was buttressed by sterling credentials, coming directly on the heels of a four year tour as a member of the U.S. Air Force Drum & Bugle Corps while stationed at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado. Throughout his marching career with the Hurricanes Paul performed as a featured player and served as an assistant instructor. Beginning in 2005, through the present, Paul has committed to his role as a member of the Hurricanes Board of Directors, imparting an invaluable brand of wisdom and guidance. His contributions have embraced needs such as; mapping and executing strategic planning, staffing Hurricane sponsored functions as well as collaborating fund raising efforts.
Paul’s introduction to the world of drum corps dates to 1962. In addition to the Hurricanes and U.S. Air Force his performance history includes membership with the Connecticut Royal Lancers, (1962 - 1966) as well as the Park City Pride from (2004 - 2012). He’s an original member, and currently performs with the Magnificent Brass Ensemble which formed in 2015. Additionally, Paul has served as a brass instructor for the Trumbull Cadets, (1970 - 1972), the Milford Shoreliners, (1972 - 1975), the ND-etts of Fairfield, (1970 -1972), and the Park City Pride from 2004 through 2012. Paul also served as a brass adjudicator from 1970 through 1975 with the Northeastern Judges Association.
Paul’s passion for drum corps was born over five decades ago. His many, and varied contributions to the activity over the years are a testament to his demonstrated leadership, benevolence as well as a positive presence influencing the Hurricanes and the activity he loves.
Gerald F. Moscariello
Gerry Moscariello’s involvement with the Corps began in the fife, drum and bugle era in 1947 and evolved through many championship competitive years. He marched for 22 years…18 playing soprano as a regular in the horn line and 4 more as a dependable, on/call hole filler…a role at which he was very adept! Gerry also served on the Board of Directors from 1982-1986, including one year as President of the Board during that tenure.
Throughout a Hurricane career that spanned 4 decades Gerry may have been the most prolific fund raiser of all. He was a relentless and tenacious solicitor of donations, program book adds as well as a hawk on ticket sales. In 1955 when it was determined that the Corps needed $1300 to run it’s first show…Gerry went out and single handedly raised $1600! He personally financed the acquisition of the Church/Home for the Hurcs in 1982. In addition, Gerry regularly used his political connections to arrange practice sites and access to schools as well as to garner favors to the Corps advantage.
His dedicated membership and willingness to consistently put forth his best effort toward the betterment of the Corps was not only exemplary, but the type of contribution and support that greatly helped propel the Hurricanes through their formative years and beyond.
John J. Moynihan
John Moynihan’s passion for drumming and the marching arts began early in life and has perpetuated for over five decades… as a performer, instructor and arranger. The dedicated efforts towards excellence he’s demonstrated throughout his career are likely an inherent quality ingrained in him by his mentor and uncle, the great Ray Luedee. He began his career as a tyke, playing the tenor drum and later moving on to snare with the Connecticut Classics from 1963 through 1966. John then moved to St. Aedan’s Emerald Cadets as a snare/section leader through 1971. John came to the Hurricanes in 1972 and was a stalwart member of the snare line through 1978, also serving as an instructor from 1976 through 1979. John’s talent and iron clad work ethic provided an invaluable and positive influence for the many great Hurricane drum lines of the 70’s.
John’s tenure as an instructor and later as an arranger also began early. He’s worked with several drum corps and band programs over the years and has remained a staunch supporter and advocate of the Hurricanes throughout. He’s instructed the Seymour Vanguards’ drummers in a beginner program in 1969-1971, The Oxford Explorers 1974-1977 and The Conn. Hurricanes 1976-1979. John also served as an arranger/instructor for Southington’s Golden Crusaders 1973-1974, Conn. Classics of East Haven 1979-1984 and The Conn. Alumni Drum & Bugle Corps from 1984 through the present. Additionally, John has instructed and arranged for high school programs including the Shelton Conn. High School Marching Band 1984-2001, The Rocky Hill Conn. High School Marching Band 1995-2004, 2006 and The East Haven Conn. High School Marching Band from 2000 through the present. John also served the Northeast Judging Association as a Percussion Adjudicator from 1974-1995.
Joseph F. Nicholson
Joe Nicholson holds the distinction of being one of thirteen original members that initially formed St. Raphael’s Golden Buccaneers in 1957.He stayed with the highly successful corps until he aged out of the junior activity. He was a member of the Buc’s touted horn quartet that at one point went undefeated for three years in addition to amassing many titles as well as National recognition on the individual scene of the ‘60’s. During this time, Joe also taught St. Raphael’s feeder corps, the Musketeers.
Joe came to the Hurricanes in 1970 were he anchored the lead baritone section for fifteen years, through ’84. In the wake of a down turn, Joe came back in 1990 through 1995 and again in 2000. Following that season he continued on as a drill tech in 2001 &2002. He was named “Hurricane of the Year” for 1977 and throughout his long career, proved to be an inspiration to those around him by exemplifying a work ethic and dedication to the Corps that sets him apart. In his many years with the Corps, there have been several highlights, but perhaps his proudest achievement is simply that of being a Hurricane!
Subsequent to his competitive career, Joe has played with and serves on the board of the Park City Pride Alumni Corps and has also served on the board of the Hurricane Alumni Association.
Robert P. Notaro *
Robert Notaro, better known to friends as well as the drum corps community as “Pepe” came to the Hurricanes in 1979. For five unforgettable years Pepe wore many hats as he helped guide the Hurcs to a higher level of competitive effectiveness. His expertise was as a musician, working the horn line. Pepe also ran field rehearsals, constantly refining the presentation. He also donned a uniform and performed French horn solos as well as filling drum major slots in competition. Off the field Pepe was involved in other ways…MC’ing parties, running fund raisers or simply using his inimitable sense of humor and story telling ability to delight those people fortunate to be around him. The guy was, simply put, a dynamo!
Pepe started his drum corps career with Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Brooklyn in 1949. Carmen Cluna handed him his first horn: a US Army bugle, with no piston or slide. After playing with a number of junior corps Pepe gained fame as a French horn soloist with the New York Skyliners. He also instructed several junior and senior corps throughout the New York area for many years. He was a strong supporter of DCI class A and A-60 (which later became Division I and III ) drum and bugle corps, that allowed smaller corps to compete at regional as well as national events. More than any other activist, Pepe opened the door so that all junior corps, regardless of size, talent, maturity and goals, had a place in the activity he so loved. Pepe’s colorful and accomplished career has been honored by his enshrinement into the Buglers Hall of Fame, the DCI Hall of Fame as well as the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame.
Franklin H. Ogle *
Frank Ogle was a member of the original John H Collins Post Corps from the late 1940’s. Frank was a member of the original Hurricanes (1955), and was joined by his brothers Harry and Bud. He played in the tenor line as did Harry. He was an active and proud Alum. Frank would often visit practices and take in the Hurcs shows while living in Derby and continued to do so during visits north after moving to Florida.
He was the drill instructor for the Hurricanes feeder corps, the Derby Cyclones, during the 1960’s. Frank also taught the Cyclones winter guard, one of the first winter to compete in Connecticut. His girls were his pride and joy, winning many contests and representing the Collins Post with the excellence he demanded.
When his marching days were over in the early 1960’s, Frank became a judge in the Northeastern Circuit, and along with his brothers Bill and Harry served as judges for many years. He eventually rose to the position of Chief Judge in the Northeastern Circuit and remained in that position until his retirement in the late 1970’s.
Beginning in the 1950’s, Frank was a Hurricane throughout. He never lost his love for the drum corps world, but most of all, his love and devotion for the Connecticut Hurricanes.
Abraham H. Olderman *
Harvey Olderman, the “Captain of the Hurricanes,” He became a member of the John H Collins Post Fife Drum and Bugle Corps in 1937. He played a fife in the early years and eventually switched to the color guard in the early 50’s. He was soon elevated to the position of Color Guard Sergeant of the Hurcs in 1955. Harvey also served as an officer of the Corps, as Treasurer as well as Secretary in various years.
Harvey, the dapper haberdasher and true gentleman that he was, was the popular figurehead of the Hurricanes. His charismatic demeanor and presence made him a fan favorite as he led the Hurricanes onto the field past his 88th birthday! He was a true ambassador of the drum corps activity for all those years, and was recognized as such, being honored as one of the six charter members of the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame in 1976.
Harvey passed away following the 1985 season, at age 88, and remains one of the longest tenured members in the history of the Hurricane organization. He marched for 49 consecutive years, with a distinction, along with George Biancarelli, of having been a part of every championship achieved by the Corps.
Douglas J. Oravez
Doug’s drum corps odyssey started in the 1960’s with the Norwalk Hot Shots. It was there, under Art Hlywa and later Pepe Notaro that he learned to play the soprano. In due time, he advanced his playing skill to the level of lead soprano. In 1970 Doug came to the Hurricanes and found a place in the lead section, eventually becoming a featured soloist for the Corps through 1999. He is most notably known for the solo he played for so many years, from the Magnificent Seven…..the Hurricanes signature song.
He served as a marching instructor for the Corps from 1999 through 2011, and in 2012 closed out his distinguished career serving as Director of the Hurricanes. Doug was so highly regarded for the respect he commanded, as well as for his ability, that he was tagged with the moniker “The General.”
Doug has also been a visual instructor for the highly recognized Norwalk High School Marching Band since 1988. In addition, Doug was named “Hurricane of the Year” in 1974 and has been honored with induction to the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame as an Associate Member.
William J. Palumbo
Bill Palumbo came from a drum corps family so his involvement with drum corps was pretty much destined to be. His father, “Hooks” Palumbo, was the long time quartermaster, and later, director of the St. Raphael’s Drum Corps. His older brothers, Tony and Pete, preceded him as members of the Musketeers, so at the age of eight Billy joined the Musketeer color guard. He made the switch to drums in 1965, when he graduated to St. Raphael’s Golden Buccaneers, where he played through 1968. For the following three years drum corps was put on hold while his focus was devoted to another passion, football…but he eventually returned to his first love when he joined the Hurcs.
Bill joined the Hurricane drum line in 1972 and for ten years was part of some of the finest lines in Hurricane lore. His level of commitment, skill, and overall true grit made him a perfect fit in those drum lines…as his inherent motivation perpetually fueled a consistent thirst to excel. Bill’s competitive career culminated in 1981 as a DCA champion.
Bill was an original member of the Park City Pride Drum and Bugle Corps and also served as a percussion instructor for nine years, 2004–2012. His other instructional experience includes; St. Raphael’s Golden Buccaneers 1970-1976, Connecticut Hurricanes 1982, Cheshire High School Band 1986-1990, Bunnell High School Band 1991-2000, Stamford High School Band 1999 as well as the Trumbull High School Band in 1997.
Peter P. Propfe
Pete Propfe has been involved with drum corps well over forty years. He began his career in 1967 as a soprano bugler with the Torrington Vagabonds Sr. Drum & Bugle Corps. In 1972 he joined the Oxford Explorers and in 1974 went to the New York Skyliners. 1976 brought him to the Berkshire Marauders through 1979 and in1980 Pete was back where he started, with the Vagabonds, where he served as Director, drum major and bugler. In 1988 Pete rejoined the Skyliners and in 1989 his varied drum corps travels brought him to the Hurricanes where he’s been ever since.
Pete has totally embraced the Hurricane mystique and made it a family passion as well, with his wife Nancy and son Tyler also becoming members of the Hurricane family. In 1995 he became corps personnel manager. In 1996 and 1997 he served as assistant director and in 1998 Pete took on the duty of Corps Director, a role he once again assumed in 2014. Beginning in 2012 Pete assumed a seat on the Hurricane’s Board of Directors.
Now into his forth decade with the Corps Pete has worn many hats throughout his exemplary career while being a part of the proud Hurricane tradition. He has been recognized and honored through induction as an associate member to the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame.
Edward V. Ratford *
Edward “Vinnie” Ratford literally got the Hurricanes off on the right foot. Regarded by many as the premier marching instructor of his day, Vinnie, the Hurricane’s first drill instructor, ran the Corps through its paces and turned them into a proficient marching unit in the early years.
When the John H. Collins American Legion Post Drum Corps transformed into the Hurricanes in 1955, Vinnie Ratford was in fact the only person involved who had experience with competitive drum and bugle corps. He was considered by many to be the preeminent marching instructor and drill design writer of the time. He thus became the most influential leader of the fledgling Hurricanes. At his urging the corps brought in Earl Sturtze in 1956 and Joe Genero in 1957. The transformation of the Hurricanes never stalled and by the time of his departure in 1962 Vinnie had mentored the Hurricanes into a championship caliber drum and bugle corps.
Vinnie began his long drum corps involvement as a tenor drummer in the Phoebe Apperson Hearst Post and the Grand Street Boy’s. Upon his return from service in WWII, he played with the national champion New York Skyliners and subsequently made the transition to drill design and instruction. Over his career Vinnie taught more than forty corps, including the Skyliners, Sunrisers, Yankee Rebels, Marksmen, Grey Knights and the Syracuse Brigadiers to name a few on the senior side as well as St. Joseph’s of Batavia, Blessed Sacrament, St. Joe’s of Newark, the Connecticut Royal Lancers as well as the Emerald Cadets of New Haven, among others on the junior scene. Vin Ratford taught many established corps, but the transformation of a fife and drum corps into a top notch competitive unit may well have been his proudest achievement. Without his savvy and guidance in those formative years, our Hurcs may not have made it!
In 1976 Vinnie was recognized and honored by induction as a charter member of the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame.
John C. Reed
John Reed, better known as Jay, began his drum corps career at an early age with the Hot Shots, of Norwalk Conn. He became a Hurricane fan in those formative years, as most of his instructors were Hurricanes. He played in the baritone line from 1961 through 1968. Upon his return from a tour in the United States Navy Jay returned to the Hot Shots as a member of their board of directors in 1971 & 1972.
Although Jay’s affection for the Hurcs never waned, life for him turned normal for many years… marrying, raising his family etc. until his brother in-law, himself a former Hurc, challenged him to join the Hurcs to celebrate the Corps 40th anniversary in 1994. Jay took that challenge and subsequently marched in the baritone line for eighteen years, wrapping up his marching career in 2011.
Beyond being a marching member, Jay effectively gave his time for many years to the annual recruiting efforts. Additionally, Jay has served as Quartermaster/truck driver since 1997. He routinely maintains and repairs the Corps equipment, and has proven to be a tireless and invaluable asset in this capacity to this day.
Patrick F. Reidy *
Pat Reidy holds the distinction of having served the longest tenure as the Hurricanes lead drum major in our long history. He was a charter member in 1932 and led the Corps for an astounding 25 years before stepping down in 1956. For all of those years that Pat was out in front, he was the figurehead of the Corps, leading with starched confidence and his ever present mace in hand.
Prior to leading the John H. Collins/Hurricanes Corps, Pat served as the drum major for the Gordon-Viselli Post Drum Corps of Ansonia from 1922 through 1931.
Pat served in the Army in WWI where he was wounded and gassed. Upon his return home he became a very prominent figure in Veterans’ Affairs, both locally as well as nationally. Pat was a past commander of the Gordon-Viselli American Legion Post as well as past commander of the Valley Chapter of the Yankee Division Veterans’ Association. He remained very active on many fronts with Veterans activity throughout his life. In addition, Pat was a charter member of the George Washington Chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart and served as its first national treasurer.
Given Pats’ history and record of leadership as well as the respect he earned through his dedicated commitment to the many organizations he served, in hindsight, it could be argued that his leadership, strength and character were a main ingredient in influencing the Corps’ steady growth as well as the successes it enjoyed in those formative years and beyond. In short….Pat clearly proved to be the ideal man for the job!
Alexander A. Richmond *
When Al Richmond joined the Hurricanes his presence instantly elevated the prowess of an already talented horn line. Al anchored the baritone line in 1972, 1973 and 1974. It was through his talent as a player and featured soloist as well as by the exemplary discipline shown in his quest for excellence that Al made his mark.
His influence and contributions were duly recognized in 1973 when he was awarded the very first “Hurricane of the Year” award. Such was the respect he commanded that Joe Genero tapped him to assume the duties of lead Drum Major for 1975 and 1976…Al didn’t flinch, and as the man out front, lead the Corps by demonstrating focus, commitment, dedication as well as an ironclad work ethic that imparted, promoted and reinforced a positive attitude throughout the Corps. In addition, Al also served as a member of the Board of Directors in 1975 – 1976.
By way of experience, Al honed his talent in his youth with St. Raphael’s Golden Buccaneers of Bridgeport, Conn. from 1964 through1968 and subsequently with the Connecticut Yankees of Stratford, Conn. in 1970 and 1971. As a brass instructor, he also taught several corps, among them the Seymour Conn. Vanguards’ in 1970 -1972, Southington Connecticut’s Golden Crusaders in 1971-1973, the Fairfield Conn. Colonnades in 1971-1973, the Connecticut Classics from East Haven Conn. in 1975 -1978 and Fantasia of Norwich, Conn. from 1979 through 1981.
Angelo H. Scarpa *
Hector Scarpa was an original in the truest sense of the word. As part of a group of guys who decided to give a new hobby a try back in 1932, Hector was a charter member of the newly created John H. Collins American Legion Post’s new drum corps. He embraced his new pastime with a passion that would fuel his dedication for the rest of his long life.
As a marching member, Hector played the fife for several years and later transferred to the color guard and ultimately, color guard captain in 1955.
Beginning early in his drum corps career he was part of the “inner circle”…influential and tirelessly devoting his efforts towards building and refining the organization into one of the finest corps in the country. Hector served as Secretary/Treasurer in the formative years assisting directors Gene Imperato and later Moe Mahalcik as well as Pete Burns until 1967.
Hector passed in the late 1972, and until that time was a regular presence at rehearsals, exuding the enormous pride and satisfaction he surely must have felt in seeing the success of what he had played so much a part of building…the Connecticut Hurricanes.
Neal J. Smith
Neal was the visual designer for the Hurricanes from 1977 through 1982. He would later return to design shows in 1990 and again in 1995 when he led the Corps to a 5th place finish in his final year with the Corps. During his time the Hurricanes won the 1981 DCA championship, sweeping all visual captions and also took top visual at the 1982 championship. His shows were fast paced and integrated both the guard and voicing to achieve maximum coordination and effect.
Neal began his drum corps career as a member of the Boston Crusaders from 1961 to 1971. He was a soprano soloist and served as drum major in his final year. During his years with Boston, they were one of the top corps in the country.
His long teaching career started when he joined the visual staff of the Rockland Defenders in 1974 and continued when he designed his first show for the Lancers from Norwood, Mass. in 1975. In 1976 he became the visual designer for Northstar and led them to the DCI finals from 1978-1980 and CYO National Champions in 1979. He’s designed shows for the Boston Crusaders, RI. Matadors, and Hawthorne Caballeros as well as several corps and marching bands in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. He is also a visual judge for DCA and various Band Associations
Neal serves on the Board of Directors for the Massachusetts Drum Corps Hall of Fame and is a member of the Boston Crusaders Hall of Fame as well as the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame
Robert H. Smith Sr.
Bob Smith has been a loyal friend and fan since the early 1950’s when the Corps was still the John H Collins Post Fife and Drum Corps. His friendship with Joe Condon, Ed Condon and Bobby Woods formed a strong personal allegiance with the Corps. He became a truly behind the scenes advocate and supporter once the drum corps was reformed and became the Connecticut Hurricanes Drum & Bugle Corps in 1955.
Through the many years that Bob was our number one fan, what most would not know is that quite often something the Hurricanes needed in the way of instruments, special events funding, etc. would all of a sudden appear without any recognition. Bob was a great friend and huge fan of Joe Genero and the inspiration Joe provided in leading the Hurricanes through their Glory Years and Championships.
Finally in 1977 Bob was voted onto the Hurricanes Board of Directors, a position he has held consecutively for the past 35 years. In 1994 Bob was inducted into the Hurricanes Hall of Fame and in 2008 was the first recipient of the most prestigious “Heart and Soul Award.” This award is given in recognition of his contributions, dedication and selflessness that are the embodiment of the Connecticut Hurricanes and its championship spirit. What makes this award so important to Bob is that it is given in the memory and spirit of his long time friends; Ed Condon, Bobby Woods, Joe Genero and Ray Luedee.
To this date in time, Bob Smith remains our number one fan and continues to serve on the Board of Directors as an inspiration to its mission.
Daniel A. Staffieri
It was happenstance that Danny Staffieri became a Hurricane in 1990. While having had no exposure to drum corps, he merely wanted to be around his girlfriend Dondi, (soon to be his wife) a member of the guard, and was promptly drawn into the Hurricane family. Not one to stand idly by, Danny became part of the support staff in 1990. He played in the cymbal line in 1991 and then learned how to play the baritone, which he did from 1992-2006. In 2007 Danny switched to tuba and anchored that section through 2013
Danny’s commitment to the Corps has always included active participation where ever he could help, e.g. fund raising, recruiting, truck driver, assisting the support staff as well as opening his home to out of town members on a regular basis. For a quarter of a century, he’s always been there. His level of involvement and dedication earned him the coveted Hurricane of the Year award twice, in 1994 & 2005 as well as the Directors award three times…1993, 2008 & 2012. Danny takes enormous pride in that he never missed a performance in his 24 years of active participation.
His passion has also branched into the marching arts community where he has taught marching and/or color guard for high school programs in Brookfield, Naugatuck and Norwalk’s Brien McMahon in Conn., Port Chester high school, NY. as well as serving as Asst. Band Director for Amity high school of Woodbridge, Conn. In addition, Danny has volunteered his time and effort as co-coordinator and color guard instructor for the Hurricane Cadets of the Hurricanes Community Outreach Program since 2008.
Danny has also been recognized and honored as an associate member of the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame.
Dondi M. Staffieri
Dondi Staffieri’s performance career with the Hurricanes covered ten years, as a member of the color guard as well a pit percussionist. Being the daughter of Hurcs Butch and Diane Verdi, Dondi grew up around the Corps beginning at the tender age of three. In 1986 she officially started her Hurricane journey by assisting the Quartermaster staff. In 1987, and having come of age, she joined the color guard and marched through 1988 as well as from 1990-1995. Additionally, Dondi performed in the pit in 1997 and 2002.
Beyond her marching career, Dondi’s dedication and willingness to serve her Corps has seen her in a variety of positions: In 1996 & 1999 and from 2011 through 2013 she operated the Hurricanes souvenir table. Since 2012 she has served as an Administrative Assistant. Dondi has regularly and actively worked tirelessly toward the success of annual fund raising and recruitment efforts. In addition, for many years she and her husband Danny, also a Hall of Famer, have opened their home to lodge out of town members on long practice weekends.
Dondi has been an advocate for the Hurricanes through her work with area youth during periods as a color guard instructor for the Rocky Hill, Central of Bridgeport, Naugatuck, Brookfield, Brien McMahon of Norwalk and Amity of Woodbridge High School Band programs.
Richard J. Tardie
Rich Tardie’s life in drum corps began when he joined the Oxford Explorers color guard, 1963 – 1965. In 1967 Rich joined the Hurricane guard and marched through 1975, participating in two DCA championship corps along the way, 1967 and 1969.
Following a hiatus, he returned to the activity in 1984 with the Connecticut Alumni corps where he enjoyed a relaxed commitment level through 1993. In 1994, Rich was asked to assume the lead of the Hurcs Honor Guard, which he readily accepted. Since that time, through 2011, Rich molded his unit to one that exuded enormous pride in presenting our Nations colors, and in leading the Hurricanes wherever they perform.
He was honored as the recipient of the “Hurricane of the Year “award in 2003. Under his guidance the Hurricanes Honor Guard has garnered countless awards, including, eight DCA world championship high honors. Beginning in 2014 Rich has been active as a member of the DCA staff. Rich has been recognized and honored through induction into the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame as an associate member.
Charles H. Tomlinson *
Charles “Chuck” Tomlinson came to the Hurricanes in 1959 as another young Valley kid enamored with the thought of being part of “the Men from Connecticut.”
Chuck marched in the Color Guard until 1965, but his contribution to the Corps went well beyond carrying a flag. His dedication and willingness to work behind the scene, as evidenced by his involvement and assistance to Director Pete Burns in representing the Hurricanes in 1963 with the formation of the DCA, led to him being named Assistant Director in 1965 and subsequently Director of the Corps for 1968 and 1969.
In the spring of 1969 it was Chuck who initiated the first weekend camp…perhaps the impetus for our great championship run of that year! Weekend camps have remained a ritual of spring to this day.
When it came time for Chuck to retire, he subsequently turned over the directorial reins to Bob Glovna in 1970, true to form however, Chuck stayed with the Corps to serve as the Business Manager and to help where needed for one more year. To him it wasn’t work….It was simply a labor of love.
Stephen W. Vargo
Stephen Vargo, known to all as Skip, started his drum corps career with the Trumbull Troubadours as a brass player in 1965. Upon leaving the junior corps ranks after five years, he joined the Connecticut Yankees for two seasons, ’70 -’71.
Skip joined the Hurricanes in 1972 and played in the baritone line through 1984. In addition, he taught and provided redesign services for the visual program in the 1985-1986 seasons. Also, in 1986 Skip was appointed to the Board of Directors and assumed the role of Treasurer, a job he held until relocating to Michigan following the 1991 season. Shortly after returning to Connecticut he rejoined the Board in 1996. He held this role until 2005 when, due to job responsibilities, he stepped down from the Board. In 2007 Skip rejoined the Board as the chairman of the finance committee through 2021.
By way of experience, Skip has also taught and wrote the visual programs for the Tornadoes Drum & Bugle Corps of Fairfield, as well as Trumbull High School and Berlin High Marching Bands. His formal education, which serves him so well in his executive roles with the Hurricanes consist of an AS degree in manufacturing engineering, a BS in business administration and an MS in healthcare management. Skips vast experience has primarily consisted of various financial roles in the healthcare industry; most have which have been with not-for-profit organizations.
Skip has also been recognized and honored as an associate member of the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame.
Phillip A. Vizzo
Phil Vizzo’s drum corps career began in 1975 as a member of Trumbull’s Bengal Lancers. He would again march with them in 1977 through 1980. In 1976, Phil marched with the Emerald Buccaneers, a merge of the Emerald Cadets and Golden Buccaneers, where he met and bonded with several members and future members of the Hurricanes. Those early bonds were not lost and he joined the Hurricanes in 1981 and played in that great baritone line of that championship year.
Phil marched through 1995 and again for the 2000 and 2001 seasons. He has served as a marching tech. for the Corps since 2006.
The year 2012 marked Phil’s 28th and final year as a Hurricane and if you were to ask him, he would freely tell you…”The best thing I ever did was join the Hurricanes…My Friends, My Home, My Love.”
Robert E. Wilcox
Bob Wilcox’ journey as a Hurricane began in the fall of 1975 as a tom player in the percussion section. In 1976 and 1977 he was section leader, arranged mallets and was quad leader in 1978 and 1980. His contribution in the championship year of 1981 was devoted to instruction but 1982 brought him back to marching as well as teaching, which he continued to do through 1989 when he retired to spend time with his family.
Bob started his drum corps career in 1959 with the Naugatuck Fife & Drum Corps. He went on to join Torrington’s Vagabonds in 1966 then played with the Connnecticut Yankees in 1967 prior to a long association with the Conn Classics. He has taught and arranged percussion for many drum corps and bands over the years some of which include the Park City Pride of Bridgeport, Connecticut Classics of East Haven, the Seymour Vanguard and Milford Shoreliners as well as the bands at East Lyme, Naugatuck, Stamford, and Brookfield High Schools.
Bob continues to teach today. In addition to his legacy as an active member of the Corps, Bob takes pride in having had many of his students go on to march with the Hurricanes, with some becoming valued staff members.
Edward A. Yagovane *
Ed Yagovane’s interest in drum corps was spawned, in fact, shortly after he was. You see his father, Ted, was a member of the Corps from the late 1930’s through the late ‘50’s. Ed was always around the Corps, so it’s only natural that he followed in his fathers footsteps by first joining the Derby Cyclones in 1958 and 1959 and subsequently moving on to Bridgeport’s PAL Cadets from 1960 through 1964.
In 1968 Ed joined the Hurricanes, marching 1968 and again in 1971 through 1973. In 1976, he came to the Corps in late season to help out as a marching instructor and returned in 1977 to become the head marching/visual instructor (that’s the year the Hurcs went co-ed…no small challenge for anyone!) Ed held this position for three years and put his heart and soul into rebuilding the Corps. He taught the Hurcs again in 1984 and 1985.
Having learned his craft (M&M) under the auspices of Hurricane great Ed Condon, Ed also instructed several local organizations including the Connecticut Classics, Trumbull Troubadours, Bengal Lancers and the Equestrians winter guard. He also consulted for the University of Alabama’s “Million Dollar Marching Band” as well as several local high school programs.
Subsequent to his teaching tenure, Ed became a member of the National Judges Association, 1980-2000, that included, among other assignments, adjudicating marching for DCA
Paula A. Yankowich *
Paula Yankowich’s first exposure to drum corps came at a very early age as her father was a member of the Stateliners Drum & Bugle Corps from Greenwich Ct. When the Stateliners transformed into a junior corps, her father quickly ushered Paula and her sister Dodie into their ranks, where they marched from 1968-1976.
In 1977 Paula joined the Hurricanes, and was among the first females in the Corps when she marched in the color guard in that transformation year. She subsequently played in the melophone line from 1980–1992.
In addition to marching, Paula has worn many hats throughout her Hurricane career with active involvement supporting the administration of the Hurricanes. From 1982-1985 she served as bartender at the Hurricane Hall and from 2014–2017 she served the Corps with efforts in fundraising, cooking, and general support duties in addition to volunteering considerable time manning the souvenir table.
Richard M. Yelinek
Rich Yelinek joined the Hurricanes in 1981, taking the last drill spot to be had on the first day of practice. He quickly became a lead soprano and part of what was perhaps the finest Hurricane soprano lines in years. At the time he was only 16 years old but found his way in the Hurricanes DCA championship corps of 81’.
Rich has had extensive training since the fourth grade, beginning with the trumpet and honing his skills through high school. He played with the concert band, jazz band orchestra, and marching band as drum major for two years. Taking many classes in music appreciation and theory, he has also learned to play multiple instruments.
He has been involved in drum corps since his early teens, starting with the Springfield Coachmen as a soloist, then, moving right to the DCA with the Hurcs. He was also a horn instructor for the Silver Knights of Ludlow Mass, and also the Marksmen Alumni corps. Rich also served as Vice-President of the Marksmen for two years. He has performed with many other corps during the off season, and has provided help to various units in the fall band season in the Conn. Area.
While becoming a repair man for brass instruments and providing this service for the Hurcs, he now develops his own line of brass mouthpieces. Living in Springfield Mass. his entire life, Rich commuted down “south” to perform with the Hurricanes for 31 brass instructor with the Corps beginning in 2015.
Rich has been recognized and honored through induction to the Buglers Hall of Fame.
Harold D. Younkin
Harold Younkin, aka, Pittsburgh Dave came to the Hurricanes in 1968. Dave’s drum corps roots trace back to 1959 when he joined a small parade corps, back home in Pittsburgh, called the Boys Brigade. After a few years he went to a senior corps called the Esquires, from West Newton Pa. In 1963 he had grown enough in talent and desire to graduate, at age 15, to a major league corps, the Pittsburgh Rockets (a charter member of the DCA in 1963) where he marched through 1967.
Hurricane luck took hold in 1968 when Dave’s profession as an aircraft mechanic brought him to Sikorsky Aircraft in Stratford Conn. Dave naturally gravitated to the Hurcs and in subsequent years, transcending four decades, became the type of member all corps can only hope for. He perfected his baritone horn parts and his drill to such degree of excellence that those around him were compelled to do the same. In 1993, Dave was acknowledged for his dedication with the “Hurricane of the Year” award. He marched in the horn line for fourteen years, capping his playing career with a DCA Championship in 1981.
Dave honed his skills as an M&M instructor with the Conn Classics from 1975 through 1978. In 1990 he brought his expertise back to the Hurricanes as a marching tech, a task he excelled at for eight years, demanding nothing less than excellence. In addition to his on field duty, Dave also served on the Hurricanes Board of Directors from 1973 through 1977.
